I had the pleasure of reviewing the Educational Insights GeoSafari Jr. Subscope for free in exchange for my honest opinion.
This subscope has really been a hit around here with my three year old little girl. She loves to explore and do all things in nature. She loves that she can take this around with her and look at objects under water whether its in her pool, water table, bath tub, or the creek!
She immediately wanted me to fill up her little kiddie pool just to test it out. She placed little figurine people, rocks, dirt, and other miscellaneous stuff in the water to observe through her subscope. She got a huge kick out of it and made me look at the objects too. She thought it was so cool.
The GeoSafari Jr. Subscope has a magnification lense that has a 2x power. For a childs toy, I thought it was pretty decent!
I love that it's just long enough that my daughter doesn't have to get her head wet to explore with the underwater life, plants/vegetation, and her toys. It also seems comfortable to hold, even though it appears bulky.
Educational Insights supports and promotes STEM learning and this subscope is a part of that. I enjoy that and definitely approve because as you probably already know, I support STEM learning too.
Luckily we had extra batteries on hand, because it does require 3 "AAA" batteries. Well, I suppose it's not absolutely necessary, but if you want the lights on it to work, you need the batteries. I think it's cool that it features little LED lights on it to help see during the night or in darker waters. We yet have to test this feature out, as we've only tried it in the daytime.
The part that you view in is really comfortable and fits my daughters head perfectly (mine too). It's like a goggle like piece that is soft and conforms to your head/around your eyes.
You do have to be careful though, my complaint is that it isn't as durable as I'd like for an outdoor exploration toy to be. My daughter dropped it once on our concrete patio and the viewer lense cracked alittle (hand to head). We can still use it but there is a crack there now and I'm not sure how much it will hold up with anymore "drops". She just went to grab it off of the table and it slipped from her hands. She didn't toss it or slam it down..
Another thing... The packaging does say not to submerge it under water so we've been careful not to. But, one day my daughter left it floating in her pool and when I pulled it out, it had swallowed some water that is now trapped inside. It does make it sort of hard to see through the viewer because it has little water droplets and has a cloudy look to it now.
This isn't stopping her from playing with it though, she still carries it around with her when she is playing outside. She likes to pretend she is finding "pretend" creatures under the water too.
If she is happy, I am happy!
The value of the Educational Insights GeoSafari Jr Subscope is $27.99. I feel that if the quality and durability is improved it'd be worth it. Otherwise, I think $15-20 is fair.
I have bought and reviewed several Educational Insights products in the past and I hardly ever have complaints. They are a wonderful company and in my opinion, mostly have good quality products.
